Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology is quickly reshaping the automotive industry by enabling highly precise, low-power wireless communication that enhances both safety and convenience. Initially adopted for digital car keys, UWB improves security over traditional fobs by pinpointing a user’s location within centimeters, ensuring the car only unlocks when the driver is precisely nearby. Qorvo’s automotive-qualified UWB SoCs, such as the QPF5100Q, are currently being tested by major manufacturers to bring this advanced capability to next-generation vehicles.

One of the most impactful new applications is Child Presence Detection (CPD). Unlike conventional motion sensors, UWB can detect tiny movements such as breathing or a heartbeat, helping prevent tragic incidents of children being left in vehicles. Demonstrations at CES 2024 showed its ability to distinguish between a child, personal items, or even forgotten food in a car seat, making it a highly reliable safety feature.

UWB also powers gesture control, allowing drivers and passengers to interact with entertainment or environmental controls through simple hand motions—skipping tracks, adjusting volume, or changing settings without touching screens or buttons. Qorvo’s QM35825 SoC supports these advanced midair interactions that improve personalization while reducing distraction.

Looking ahead, UWB will expand to features like digitally shareable keys, smarter CPD alerts, expanded gesture-based interfaces, and context awareness, where the car adapts to seating positions, temperature preferences, and driver behavior. While its name may sound quirky, UWB has become a powerful enabler of smarter, safer, and more intuitive automotive experiences—rightfully earning the title “Ultra-Wowband.”
