Understanding RLC Circuit Responses

RLC circuits are used to store and release energy in controlled pulses. The type of response (overdamped, critically damped, or underdamped) depends on the damping ratio, which is calculated using the circuit's components. Capacitance plays a significant role in determining the waveform's shape. Smaller capacitors result in smaller peak currents.

This article discusses the equations for calculating current in each damping case, the impact of resistance and capacitance on the response, and real-world applications of RLC circuits.
