The Importance of GPS (GNSS) Derived Timing

Source: GPS Networking

GPS Networking, GPS Networking Splitters

Many users of GPS believe its main function is to provide a means of deriving position, but the constellation of satellites is also a remarkably efficient time keeper. Each satellite contains 4 atomic clocks, so when their signals are received by any GPS enabled device, the synchronized time is within 100 billionths of a second, without the cost of owning, operating, and maintaining atomic clocks. This application note details how GPS or GNSS timing is a crucial component for Critical Resource and Key Infrastructure (CIKR) sectors and stresses the importance of maintaining  reliable timing networks .
