Nortel Completes W-CDMA Calls

Wireless systems and equipment manufacturer Nortel Networks has successfully completed packet-switched, mobile video conference call, and high speed web browsing at transmission rates up to 384 kb/s using wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) third-generation (3G) radio technology. The company performed these calls to demonstrate the capabilities of upcoming W-CDMA 3G systems.

The current high-speed packet and video calls follow a number of other successful demonstrations of 3G by Nortel. These other demonstrations included voice calls over the public telephone switched telephone network (PSTN) using 3G terminals and data calls using PCMCIA equipped laptops.

Nortel is also currently engaged in a 3G trial with British Telecom. According to Nortel, British Telecom has already successfully completed a series of test voice calls using its 3G technology.
