Murata Announces Ceramic Capacitors Designed To Reduce Acoustic Noise
Murata Electronics North America, a world-leading innovator in electronics and the largest global supplier of ceramic passive components, recently introduced the GJ8 series of multilayer monolithic ceramic chip capacitors (MLCC) designed to lower acoustic noise in consumer and industrial electronic applications by up to 30 decibels (dB) in the 1uF model. The acoustic noise generated by 4.7 microfarad (µF) to 10µF GJ8 series capacitors represents an improvement of at least 10dB over competitors' MLCCs. The unwanted sound is caused by the expansion and contraction of the dielectric element, which triggers the printed circuit board (PCB) to vibrate at the amplitude of the voltage applied. When the frequency of the voltage applied approaches audio frequencies, a noise can be heard. However, with Murata's advanced technology, the GJ8 series of MLCCs dramatically reduces this sound.
In addition to its noise suppression capabilities, the new capacitors are available in low-profile models with thicknesses of just 1.25mm, 1.60mm or 2.50mm - depending on capacitance. The compact size helps engineers design the capacitors into increasingly thinner and lighter electronics. Also, the GJ8 series is rated up to 50 volts (V).
"Murata's knowledge of ceramic capacitors is industry leading. We have used our design qualifications and enhanced materials to develop an MLCC that meets size needs as well as removes the unwanted noise," said Mark Waugh, Senior Product Manager for Murata Electronics North America. "Our new GJ8 series is a perfect example of Murata's unique and sophisticated capabilities and how they greatly benefit customers."
Murata's capacitors, including the GJ8 series, are manufactured from in-house, superior ceramic materials using unique design and processing technologies. To meet the demands of a wide variety of applications, Murata's chip MLCC products range from the ultra small 01005 size devices, to high capacitance products designed to replace tantalum and electrolytic dielectrics, as well as low ESL, high frequency and array products. In addition, Murata's capacitors come in voltage ratings from under 3 volts to several thousand volts.
