Modular Synchronization Platform Adds The Highest Performance Signaling For SATCOM And RADAR
Spectracom's SecureSync adds a new atomic clock reference to provide the best combination short- and long-term stability for satcom and other applications
Spectracom, a business of the Orolia Group and the leading provider of synchronization systems for critical operations, announced recently at the Satellite Conference, its low phase noise Rubidium atomic clock reference for the most demanding applications. The combination of a high performing internal clock with integrated GPS timing is valuable for the latest generation of satellite communications and radar applications. Key performance characteristics include:
- Excellent short-term stability and phase noise characteristics
- High accuracy: 10E-12 frequency, +/- 25 nanosecond timing, when locked to civilian or SAASM GPS
- Long holdover in case of loss of GPS: +/- 1 microsecond after 24 hours
Legacy systems traditionally use a low phase noise crystal oscillator to 'clean up' a single output signal of an atomic clock to achieve a high level of both short- and long-term stability. In contrast, Spectracom’s implementation provides a very high level of performance across its entire modular synchronization platform known as SecureSync. The SecureSync currently offers over 30 different modules. The low-phase noise Rubidium clock provides its level of performance to every signal generated by any module.
Dave Sohn, engineering manager at Spectracom, said “We understand the need for high performing time and frequency signals for today’s communication systems. This new reference clock is one of five options we provide our customers to match performance to their synchronization requirements to result in the lowest cost of ownership.”
“Phase noise performance is particularly important because it causes low signal quality in satellite transmissions, limits the operating range of radar systems, and results in bit errors in digital communications,” explains Mr. Sohn. “What’s more, today’s higher frequency systems are more susceptible to phase noise in the frequency source. Mitigating this error requires careful clock management.”
Spectracom’s SecureSync modular time and frequency synchronization platform is on display at Satellite 2013, booth number 4119, Walter E Washington Convention Center, Washington, DC until March 21.
