Microtune Offers DVB-C Reference Design For Chinese Set-Top Box Manufacturers

Jointly developed with STMicroelectronics, Reference Design features Microtune's silicon tuner and STMicroelectronics' demodulator

Plano, TX -- Microtune today announced the availability of a Digital Video Broadcast-Cable (DVB-C) Reference Design that offers an easy-to-deploy, mass-market set-top box solution at aggressive new price points. Jointly developed with STMicroelectronics, the Reference Design is targeted to the potentially high-volume Chinese domestic market and is engineered to enable developers to minimize design costs and to speed-up deployment.

STMicroelectronics (ST) is a leading supplier of silicon chips for set-top boxes and Microtune is an innovative supplier of radio frequency (RF) silicon tuners for consumer electronics and broadband communications.

The joint Reference Design combines the two companies' highly integrated, high-performance front-end chips in a complete ready-to-produce solution. It is based on ST's STV0297 QAM demodulator and Microtune's MicroTuner MT2050 single-chip tuner. The Reference Design comes with full design support, including circuit schematics, printed circuit board layout, bill of materials and core software. Set-top box manufacturers can use the design as their design or can adapt it to meet their particular application requirements.

"Suppliers of digital services in China require cost-effective solutions to drive the digital roll-out," said Roger Walker, general manager of the Operator Division of ST's Home Entertainment Group. "ST and Microtune have a history of working together and of incorporating our complementary digital and RF technologies in cost-efficient set-top box platforms. Together, we provide the China market a highly competitive solution that responds to our customers' requirements for high-performance, low-cost DVB-C set-top boxes."

"The DVB-C Reference Design is engineered to dramatically reduce product development and production times in a fast and flexible way for set-top box manufacturers planning to enter the digital market," said Albert Taddiken, Microtune's chief operating officer. "Our collaboration with ST leverages both our companies' silicon technologies and results in an integrated, complete solution. It enables our customers to bring high-performance digital set-top box products to market quickly and at attractive costs to consumers."
