Inside IMS2010: Distinguished MTT-S Members Honored During Plenary Session

By Jim Pomager, RF Globalnet

The plenary session at the IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium (IMS) always touches on a wide range of topics, and this year's session was no exception. Chairman JK McKinney and other IMS and MTT-S officers formally welcomed attendees to "Microwave Week," provided us with a preview of the technical program, explored the RF industry's deep roots in southern California, and updated us on the current state of the society.

Perhaps most importantly, however, the plenary session afforded society brass its annual opportunity to acknowledge the special contributions and achievements of its members. In addition to the multitude of IMS Steering Committee members and other volunteers whose efforts made IMS2010 possible, select MTT-S members were recognized for remarkable achievements — technical or otherwise — throughout their distinguished careers.

Tomiyasu Recognized For Charitable Giving
For his extraordinary philanthropic work within the industry, Dr. Kiyo Tomiyasu was inducted into the IEEE Heritage Circle at the Thomas Alva Edison level of giving. Dr. Tomiyasu helped established two IEEE Foundation Funds that support students: the Harold Sobol Student Grant, administered by the MTT Society, and the Mike Takagi Student Prize, administered by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). He also set up and funded the IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award, the technical field award that recognizes early-to-mid-career contributions to technologies that show promise of innovative applications.

Rodwell Receives IEEE David Sarnoff Award
The 2010 IEEE David Sarnoff Award was presented to Mark J.W. Rodwell, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the Nanofabrication Laboratory at UCSB, for his development of millimeter-wave and sub-millimeter-wave indium phosphide (InP) heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs). The IEEE David Sarnoff Award is presented each year to an individual or group for "exceptional contributions to electronics."

Class Of 2010 IEEE Fellows Honored
2010 MTT-S President Samir El-Ghazaly awarded 12 MTT-S members with the IEEE's highest member grade, Fellow, which recognizes "unusual and outstanding professional distinction." The recipients, and their citations, were as follows:

  • Christophe Caloz — for contributions to the development and application of electromagnetic metamaterial structures
  • Zhizhang Chen — for contributions to time-domain electromagnetic modeling and simulation
  • Ganesh Gopalakrishnan — for leadership in microwave photonics and high-speed optical lithium niobate modulator development
  • Shiban Koul — for contributions to analysis and design of microwave and millimeter wave components and circuits
  • Richard Lai — for development and space-qualified insertion of millimeter-wave transistor and integrated-circuit technologies
  • Jenshan Lin — for contributions to integrated microwave circuits and systems for wireless sensors
  • Imran Mehdi — for contributions to submillimeter-wave device technology
  • Ahmadreza Rofougaran — for contributions to single chip system integration of radio frequency complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology
  • Emmanouil Tentzeris — for contributions to three dimensional conformal integrated devices for wireless communications and sensing
  • Charles Weitzel — for contributions to compound semiconductor technology and microwave devices
  • Ruey-Beei Wu — for contributions to coplanar waveguide passive components
  • Takamaro Kikkawa — for contributions to interconnect technologies for integrated circuits
