Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is the third-generation wireless communications standard that is capable of delivering voice and high-speed data using W-CDMA. The UMTS system offers a layered approach to coverage by utilizing macrocells (towers), microcells, picocells, and femtocells.
