Combines Mobile Radios and GPS Receivers for Easy-to-Use AVL

AeroComm, Inc., the wireless systems division of International FiberCom, Inc, has introduced its new automatic vehicle locator (AVL) system for regional tracking of fleet vehicles. This system is ideal for municipalities, police, fire, EMS, delivery services or taxi/car services that need to track and communicate in real time with their vehicles in the field.

AeroComm's AVL system includes 220 MHz two-way radios, a GPS receiver and mapping software, which is installed on a PC in the dispatcher's office, allowing them to visually track fleet vehicles. The GPS receiver and radio with antenna are installed in the vehicle and a base station is deployed in the dispatch location, making two-way communication possible.

"We built our AVL system using 220 MHz private land mobile radio bands, which is an ideal technology for efficiently transmitting data signals, as well as voice, " said Frank Barbara, Principal Engineer of AeroComm. "With benefits ranging from faster responses to emergencies to more efficient delivery, we are confident that the added reliability and bandwidth that come from using the 220 MHz band will attract users to our vehicle locator system."

Vehicles can be tracked on a base station PC monitor to improve operational efficiency and security. Built-in features of the AeroComm system include remote monitoring and control via the vehicle unit's connection to sensors and switches. The system can be set up to automatically transmit positional data at set intervals. These features enable dispatchers to monitor a vehicle's route, location, mileage and speed, as well as to provide the driver with appropriate driving directions. In addition, a full array of reports and logs can be created to report many other statistics that a fleet operator may want to track, or to play back a vehicle's routes in the future.

Demonstration disks of AeroComm's AVL system will be available beginning June 30 and can be obtained by calling the company at 877-443-3498.
