Chinese Manufacturer Selects Microtune RF Components For Portable DVD Players

Plano, TX -- Microtune announced today that Malata Group Ltd. has selected the MicroTuner MT2050 silicon tuner and the MT1110 broadband amplifier as RF components for Malata's new 9-inch and 10.2-inch personal DVD players. Targeted for Malata's worldwide original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and original design manufacturer (ODM) customers, the new personal DVD players enable consumers not only to play movies and listen to CDs, but also to watch TV.

Malata is one the largest manufacturers of VCD and DVD players in mainland China with a product portfolio that also includes desktop DVD players and recorders, DVB digital and satellite receivers, Flash MP3 players and home LCD-TVs. The company is deploying Microtune RF technology as part of a long-term program to provide the most advanced consumer electronics, including those for export to global customers. Malata's two new personal DVD players are currently in production.

"China's capability to manufacture cost-sensitive electronics, coupled with its domestic market for entertainment services, is driving the demand for advanced RF technology in consumer products," said Albert H. Taddiken, Microtune's COO. "Microtune is pleased to have been selected by Malata. This design win signals our commitment to the China market and underscores our ability to support customers and their next-generation TV products wherever they are developing them. It reinforces our goal to be a preferred RF partner and supplier-of-choice to global customers, while helping them meet the growing demand for high-performance, cost-optimized RF-TV electronics."

"We required an industry-leading tuner to enable TV in our portable DVD players," explains Mr. Lai JianRong, head of Digital Technology R&D Center of Malata. "Microtune's MT2050 supports worldwide TV reception standards and delivers the superior RF performance and reliability required for portable durability. Its small form factor was critical in designing sleek, compact DVD players. In addition to its technology, Microtune's China team also provided full customer and applications engineering support, enabling us to accelerate our system design."

At the heart of the Malata portable DVD players' TV capability is the MicroTuner MT2050 silicon tuner-amplifier, Microtune's high-performance digital tuner. Based on a patented, dual-conversion architecture, the MT2050 integrates the tuner with low-noise and intermediate frequency amplifiers into a miniature, multi-functional 1/4-inch-square chip. It eliminates the components, circuitry, and costs of alternative modular solutions, making it alignment-free and air coil-free. The chip is engineered to achieve excellent performance, offering superior image rejection, channel flatness, and phase noise with high sensitivity for weak RF reception areas. For consumers, these technical parameters translate into superior picture and audio quality, dual-conversion tuner performance, and increased reliability.

The MT1110 RF broadband amplifier is a general-purpose, high-performance, 75-ohm amplifier that provides a signal boost across the entire downstream broadband spectrum. The first of its kind in the industry, the MT1110 is optimized for broadband applications, cable frequencies, and multiple-tuner configurations.
