MtronPTI Shrinks Size 7x for Wireless Communications Clocks

MtronPTI, leader in precision frequency control and custom RF/microwave filters, recently announced the M6053/4,M6055/6 and M6064/5 TCXOs – tight tolerance, high stability in portable electronics-friendly small packages. Mel Mehret, MtronPTI lead wireless communications applications engineer says, “Most telecom applications today need tight initial frequency tolerance and low drift but increasingly small package size is important, especially in portable applications. New designs do not want the industry legacy 5 x 7 mm package. MtronPTI’s M6053, M6055 and M6064 offer frequency stability down to ±0.2 ppm but in packages down to 2.5 x 2.0 mm – an area reduction of 7x over older 5 x 7 mm designs.”

International Data Corporation (IDC), a global provider of market intelligence, advisory services, and events for the information technology, telecommunications and consumer technology markets, recently forecast smart phone shipments to surge 40% in 2013, topping 1 billion units for the first time (as reported by Forbes, 9/4/2013). With the growth of data-intensive wireless traffic the number of access points (femto cells and broadband Wi-Fi, WiMax) has grown about 1.5x each year since 2009 (source: StatCounter.com, mobile vs. desktop internet use, 5/2013). For growth to continue at that pace, costs need to come down while bandwidth needs increase as video becomes the primary use.

Mel continues, “Wireless access point makers look for low phase noise to increase bandwidth with a low bit error rate. Tight frequency stability is wanted since often the ambient temperature is uncontrolled (think an outdoor stadium or street pole). And they’d like that performance in a smaller size to help drive overall unit costs down. The smaller package sizes of our new TCXO families fit the bill perfectly.”

The M6053, M6055 and M6064 TCXOs and companion M6054, M6056 and M6065 VCTCXOs are shipping now, available from 10 to 52 MHz, with a -40 °C to +85 °C operating range and in 5.0 x 3.2, 3.2 x 2.5 and 2.5 x 2.0 mm packages. RoHS compliant, MtronPTI TCXO/VCTCXO products are used in avionic flight control, point-to-point radio, broadband access base stations and professional wireless sound systems.
