SDR Forum Issues RFI On Regulation Of Next-Generation Radio Systems

Denver -- The Software Defined Radio (SDR) Forum, a nonprofit international industry association dedicated to promoting the success of next-generation radio technologies, has issued a request for information (RFI) on the regulation of next-generation radio systems. The RFI solicits input from Forum members, the communications technology industry, academia, government agencies, and other parties interested in helping to establish a practical and compelling SDR Forum regulatory agenda.

Responses to this RFI, subsequent member discussions and other inputs will be used to create several Forum regulatory recommendations related to SDR and cognitive radio capabilities. The Forum will then use these recommendations to engage in advocacy and education efforts that promote the consolidated positions of its members in national, regional, and international bodies.

"The SDR Forum is eager to engage with the international regulatory community in supporting our members' organizational objectives and promoting the positions of the SDR community as a whole," said Bernard Eydt of Booz Allen Hamilton and chair of the SDR Forum's Regulatory Committee. "We believe that the results of this RFI will lead to SDR Forum recommendations that have broad, global applicability and will promote the use of reconfigurable radio technologies across regional, national and local jurisdictions."

Respondents who submit their completed survey by the March 14 due date will be automatically eligible to participate in a drawing to win an Apple iPod Nano.

Results of the RFI will be compiled into a summary report to be presented to members at the SDR Forum's April general meeting in Rome. In addition, the Forum's Regulatory Committee will hold a series of teleconference calls and face-to-face meetings for its members to evaluate the inputs and develop recommendations. Initial recommendations are expected to be adopted at the Forum's September general meeting.
