What Is An SMPM Connector?

SMPM stands for Sub-Miniature Push-on Micro. However, while the acronym SMPM is common in the industry, these types of connectors can go by many other names. Gilbert Corning markets these connectors as GPPO (Gilbert Precision Push-On). SSMP (Sub-small Solder Mount Push-on) is another common designation. All of these products are the same and are intermateable. However, only SMPMs adhere to the specifications set forth by MIL-STD-348.

No matter the name, at its core an SMPM connector is a blind-mate, push-on connector and represents the next evolution of SV’s SMP product line. As compared to the SMP, which can perform at frequencies up to 40 GHz, SMPM interconnects provide reliable, high quality performance from DC to 65 GHz. Additionally, the SMPM has an interface diameter that is 33% smaller than the SMP.

The characteristics of an SMPM make it an ideal choice when dealing with applications that require high precision and high density. Any RF project involving analysis, lab equipment, or automated test and instrumentation may rely on the high frequency range of the SMPM connector. Meanwhile, Mil-Aero and Defense applications include projects like phased array radars or board-to-board functions. In these high-density applications, the surface area is at a premium making the SMPM’s reduced footprint extremely valuable. Just like SV’s SMP line, SMPM connectors and cable assemblies have been engineered to accommodate radial and axial misalignments, ensuring optimal performance in every condition.

The popularity and versatility of the SMPM connector have carried through to many of SV’s innovations. Our SMPM product line has expanded to include PCB Surface Mount and Edge Launch connectors, female-to-female bullets, VITA 67.3 products and more. Most recently, SV introduced a new line of Threaded SMPM connectors, which maintain its small form factor and higher frequency but add a threaded coupling nut to more reliably secure the connector to its mate.
