The R&S ZNB-K4 software option for the Rohde & Schwarz R&S ZNB series of vector network analyzers (VNAs) extends the instruments capability by mixer and frequency converter measurements. It includes a graphical wizard that makes setup and execution even of complex measurements very easy. Using the R&S SMARTer Cal calibration technique that combines vector-error-corrected calibration with power calibration it provides accurate measurement results.

The graphical wizard greatly simplifies setup and calibration of the R&S ZNB, guiding users step by step through the required procedure. With the wizard, users can intuitively configure RF, IF and LO (local oscillator) frequencies and power levels, as well as the source for the LO signal. The graphical display gives an immediate overview of current settings. The R&S ZNB K4 supports also sophisticated applications such as measurements on harmonic mixers, converters with multiple mixer stages, and frequency multipliers. When the R&S ZNB is equipped with a second generator it provides even the LO signal for a mixer and does not need an additional signal generator. If the application requires more sources, the R&S ZNB can also control multiple external generators.

The R&S ZNB’s new SMARTer Cal calibration technique combines power calibration with system error correction, and therefore can also correct errors caused by test port mismatch. This improves measurement accuracy without the need for external attenuators, and increases dynamic range and measurement speed.

The R&S ZNB’s performance and features were previously found only in high-end instruments. The vector network analyzer comes with frequency ranges from 9 kHz to 4.5 GHz or 8.5 GHz and in two-port and four-port models. It has a dynamic range up to 140 dB and a sweep time of 4 ms with 401 points. Trace noise is an exceptionally low 0.004 dB RMS, and output power is up to +13 dBm adjustable in a range of –85 dBm to +13 dBm. The instrument's intuitive user interface allows users to access most of the instrument's functions with just three operating steps. The large 12.1-inch touchscreen displays even complex measurements with multiple traces in a clear and straightforward manner.
