Repack Timeline Acceleration Drives Hardware Demand, Sparks RFS Partnership With MYAT

RF players partner to help broadcasters address wait time for equipment following heightened incentives for faster spectrum shift

With mobile carriers increasingly incentivizing broadcasters to vacate their current spectrum allocation early as part of the FCC repack, there has been a surge in demand for repack-ready infrastructure that can be deployed and installed immediately.

To address this challenge, Radio Frequency Systems (RFS) and MYAT have partnered to meet what has now become the fast-paced needs of broadcasters today and in the coming months:

  • The partnership sees RFS' new repack and ATSC3.0-ready UHF mask filters pre-integrated into MYAT's DTV RF transmission systems.
  • The complete RF systems will be assembled at MYAT's in-country facility (New Jersey) and kept in inventory, reducing lead times and letting installers respond to sudden needs around the repack far quicker than they could otherwise.
  • RFS' new 6-pole and 8-pole UHF filters are cast instead of soldered or bolted together, resulting in more even and consistent dissipation of heat and lower insertion loss. Filters are available up to 60 kW.
  • These systems can be tuned in under an hour and tailored to meet each broadcaster's individual needs before they ship.

"Serving both broadcasters and mobile carriers, RFS has unique insight into both industries when it comes to the spectrum repack," said Eddy Vanderkerken, Director of Sales for Broadcast at RFS. "Seeing the desire to accelerate the repack further in 2018 has driven an urgent demand for new broadcasting equipment suited to the new spectrum allocation. By partnering with MYAT in response to this, we can together get that hardware in place as soon as requested."

Philip Cindrich, President of MYAT, added: "By combining RFS and MYAT's expertise, we can create comprehensive products that are designed to meet the specific requirements of broadcasters during the repack. Not only this, but by anticipating the impending rise in demand in this way, we can deliver quality products with minimal lead time and ensure that accelerated timelines for the repack are met."
