Rohde & Schwarz has successfully put into operation a first Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) test system. This is the first phase of implementing a fully integrated spectrum monitoring and signal location system with more than 90 monitoring and measuring stations. The project is based on the new R&S UMS300 compact monitoring and radiolocation system equipped with weatherproof sensors.
For its first customer application, the spectrum monitoring and geolocation TDOA solution from Rohde & Schwarz was designed particularly for dense electromagnetic scenarios. The system provides regulatory authorities with especially high precision for locating radio interference in urban areas. This solution can be integrated into existing system topologies. Multiple TDOA receivers take simultaneous snapshots of a transmitter signal. The transmitter's position is then determined by correlating the data from at least three receivers. The extreme sensitivity and high-precision synchronization of these monitoring receivers deliver optimal results for evaluating the electromagnetic spectrum.
The new R&S UMS300 from the R&S UMS universal monitoring system family performs these measurement and direction-finding tasks quickly and reliably. Its integrated GPS receiver provides a timestamp with nanosecond accuracy for the TDOA application. The system's compact weatherproof housing can be mounted directly on an antenna mast, which significantly improves sensitivity. The modularity of the R&S UMS300 allows the system to be flexibly used in various scenarios. The design was optimized for TDOA location, classic Angle of Arrival (AoA) direction finding and a hybrid approach combining the two geolocation methods.
