Industry Views: SATCOM 2010: Current Trends In System Design And Application
With the Satellite 2010 event set to begin in just a few days, RF Globalnet thought the time was right to take stock of the satellite communications (SATCOM) industry — to explore some of the emerging design and application trends impacting this constantly evolving market. For assistance in this endeavor, we turned to Cobham's David Thombs.
Thombs is director of Advanced Technology - Sensor Electronics for Cobham Sensor Systems, a strategic business unit under Cobham's Defense Systems Division. With over 27 years' tenure in the defense industry, Thombs has extensive experience in engineering, integrated product team leadership, and technical business development. In his current position, he is responsible for the development of new business opportunities, strategic planning, the development and advancement of antenna systems, management of IR&D, and oversight of key pursuits and programs for the $200M Cobham Sensor Electronics Business Unit. Thombs holds a BSEE with a Certificate in Communications from the University of Hartford, as well as an Executive Certificate in Strategy and Innovation from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
In this Q&A, Thombs talks with RF Globalnet about the current state of the SATCOM sector, identifies what he thinks are the most promising new application areas for SATCOM technology, and discusses the hottest trends in SATCOM system design.
