This article describes crystal clock typical performance under acceleration and approaches to manage vibration effects. Methods are compared and shortcomings discussed. Intriguing results from a new resonator design are previewed, and a shock test facility is introduced.
Spotlight On Oscillators
10- To 50-MHz Oscillator: TCXO T1300 TCXO's are 100% screened for g-Sensitivity performance, which is <0.05 ppb (5 x 10-11/g of applied acceleration force). They are relatively impervious to effects of shock and vibration. Phase noise improvements of more than 40dB when compared to other TCXOs are achievable under random vibration operation.
3- To 18-GHz Frequency Source This frequency source covers the 3- to 18-GHz frequency range and features a self-checking function, a controlling power supply, and signal control. It has a 1-kHz frequency step, >10dBm output level, <3 dB amplitude flatness at room temperature (<5 dB at high and low temperatures), >50 dB stray rejection, and >40 dB harmonic rejection.
1200-MHz OVCSO (Ovenized Voltage Controlled SAW Oscillator) This 1200-MHz OVCSO features a unique Micro-Oven design that stabilizes the frequency to +/- 10 ppm over a full temperature range of -40C to +85C. Complete warm up occurs in less than 3 seconds and only requires an initial 0.25W of power at room temperature. It is suitable for use in analog signal processing in radar, communications, electronic warfare, and other defense and space applications.
HPO Oscillator Series This oscillator features high stability, a 25-MHz to 150-MHz operating frequency, an HCMOS output, and a -55 °C to +125 °C operating temperature range. It’s suitable for harsh environments with high and low temperatures and high vibration.
8-mm High, 8- To 120-MHz OCXO This OCXO covers the 8 MHz to 120 MHz and has a height of only 8 mm. Despite its small size, it features a short warm-up time, low power consumption, low phase noise, and excellent temperature stability.
