A rotary joint is the key component of any rotational radar system. It is an electro-mechanical device that provides the critical interface between the stationary and rotating sections of a radar system; allowing signals to be transmitted back and forth between the antenna and ground components with little or no distortion.

A rotary joint is a passive rotating transmission line that has the ability to pass D.C. and R.F. signals with minimal degradation. It can be as simple as 1 channel (1 inch long) or as complicated as 73 channels (16 feet long).
They are true electro-mechanical devices in which the mechanical design considerations are equally as important as the R.F. design considerations. Other devices, such as slip rings (low frequency and power rotating joints), optical encoders (angular position measuring devices), gears, motors, etc. can be integrated into the Rotary Joint assembly.
