Rohde & Schwarz To Present New Integrated Naval Communications System At DSEI

R&S SDTR software

Rohde & Schwarz will showcase the highlights of its integrated communications and intelligence systems portfolio at DSEI in London. The electronics company's presentations will include an innovation for naval communications: R&S NAVICS – a VoIP based switching system with a unique security concept. Also on display will be the R&S SDTR software defined tactical radio. In combination with high data rate, MANET capable waveforms, the radio provides secure tactical communications. Rohde & Schwarz will also present its new ELINT solution for detecting, acquiring and analyzing radar signals. The system was specifically developed to meet intelligence requirements in difficult signal scenarios.

The integrated naval communications systems from Rohde & Schwarz offer technical superiority, user friendliness and outstanding cost efficiency. The new R&S NAVICS VoIP based switching system will serve as a core component for future ready voice and data communications for all classes of ships. The system interconnects the onboard voice terminals as well as all other subsystems for internal and external communications via a uniform IP network. It allows secure and controlled voice communications between users of networks of various classification levels on board a ship. What is different about this system is the extensive use of ruggedized, conventional IT technology with accreditable security provided by Rohde & Schwarz. As a result, the number of voice terminals can be reduced and state-of-the-art ATEX smartphones employed within security-critical environments ("man on the move"). An intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) provides a modern and convenient means of operating the technically complex system. With R&S NAVICS, Rohde & Schwarz brings the advantages of IT technology to naval communications for the first time. At the same time, the system facilitates the handling of obsolescences. A common infrastructure is set up for all services on board, referred to as "shared network infrastructure" and "shared computing environment". The system’s open architecture also makes it easy to integrate future technological developments. The newly developed system is a core component of the integrated communications system to be deployed on board the British Royal Navy's Type 26 global combat ship (GCS). BAE Systems awarded Rohde & Schwarz a contract to equip the first three ships in July 2015.

The R&S SDTR software defined tactical radio from Rohde & Schwarz provides secure and reliable voice and data communications for ground forces. Together with the new R&S HDR waveforms, it is fully IP capable and delivers high data rate, jam resistant and network enabled radiocommunications. The R&S SDTR is based on a standardized software communications architecture (SCA), allowing both standardized and proprietary waveforms to be ported to the radio. This meets the need for interoperability with allied forces during missions. The R&S SDTR radios’ new capability to form mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) enhances operational flexibility.

Another highlight Rohde & Schwarz will present at DSEI in London is the company's innovative system for detecting, acquiring and analyzing radar signals (ELINT). The system was developed with a focus on handling difficult signal scenarios such as those with weak or LPI signals. The solution is geared toward ease of operation and comprehensive functionality, and its hardware and software are tuned accordingly. A newly designed antenna system enables setups integrating acquisition, direction finding and communications antennas. The result is a compact, space saving system that meets the requirements of modern signal scenarios, where overlaps between communications and radar intelligence applications are becoming increasingly common.

The tried and tested COMINT/CESM solutions from Rohde & Schwarz, which can be adapted to meet a broad range of requirements, round out the company's portfolio. A highlight is the new R&S DDF5GTS multichannel scanning direction finder, which enables fast and comprehensive radio spectrum monitoring and DF measurements. It was designed for use in especially demanding scenarios, and its high scan speed, sensitivity and DF accuracy make it ideal for comprehensive signal acquisition in dense electromagnetic environments. The R&S CA120 software, for example, is ideal for multichannel signal processing and analysis. Used with the direction finder, it can combine the acquisition and analysis of emissions with bearing information within a frequency band. Innovative antenna systems from Rohde & Schwarz ensure optimal results under challenging conditions, and a broad selection of antennas offers operational flexibility. Rohde & Schwarz communications intelligence systems are deployed worldwide in mobile and stationary units on land as well as on maritime and airborne platforms.
