There have been several interesting developments in antenna technology in the news recently. In the military and defense sector, the Air Force is looking for a partner to design wideband dual polarized phased array radar antenna technology, which it hopes will lead to the development of passive radar to monitor adversaries without alerting them of its presence. In wireless broadband, the focus of AT&T’s multi-billion dollar LTE network expansion is smaller cells that include distributed antenna systems (DAS), which take the capacity of a single cell and distribute it among numerous antennas. Finally, the newest addition to the Deep Space Network will come on line soon — the massive 115-foot diameter dish antenna, which feeds a state-of-the-art cryogenically cooled LNA, will listen and talk to NASA’s various deep space exploration vehicles.
