San Francisco, CA /PRNewswire/ -- The highly anticipated Spectrum Summit will kick off the 4G World 2012 Conference and Expo taking place at McCormick Place inChicago from October 29 to November 1, 2012. It is the only conference and expo covering the entire ecosystem of next-generation 4G mobile broadband technologies.

"Spectrum is the critical oxygen that will enable the mobile industry to expand along the path to 4G," observes 4G Summit Chair, Berge Ayvazian. "But the world's 4G spectrum resources remain highly constrained and fragmented as government officials and industry leaders debate the best methods to relieve the global spectrum crunch."

The 4G World Spectrum Summit, which takes place on October 29, will address many issues pertaining to the spectrum crunch that 4G AmericasCTIA and other prominent telecommunications organizations brought to the attention of U.S legislators on September 12, 2012 through a joint letter in which they supported the government's goal of 500 MHz for mobile broadband, but urged action now on reallocating cleared, paired spectrum below 3 GHz.

According to the letter, between Q1 2011 and Q1 2012, traffic on licensed mobile networks almost doubled. Cisco's U.S. mobile data forecast estimates that mobile data traffic will increase 18 times from 2011 to 2016. Ericsson predicts that, over the next 5 years, mobile data traffic will grow 15 times.

Co-sponsored by 4G Americas, the 4G World Spectrum Summit Opening Keynote, entitled "Spectrum in the Americas: Challenges and Opportunities for the Mobile Broadband Ecosystem," will be given by Chris Pearson, President, 4G Americas. According to Pearson, "Allocating more licensed, internationally-harmonized spectrum for the mobile broadband industry soon is critical to the U.S. economy, wireless industry and technology sector."

The 4G World Spectrum Summit will be capped off with a regulatory Fireside Chat with Commissioner Ajit Pai, Federal Communications Commission (FCC)hosted by Fred Campbell, Director, Communications Liberty and Innovation Project (CLIP), Competitive Enterprise Institute.

Other 4G World Spectrum Summit sessions include:
