From The Editor

Welcome to our Software Special Edition Newsletter. Comprehensive EDA software tools are more important to engineers than ever before. New technology with complex packaging, modern waveforms, and techniques like MIMO require a great deal of analysis. However, getting these complex designs to market quickly is critical for companies to remain competitive. All this puts added pressure on design teams, which are running very lean these days. Having powerful EDA software and engineers who are skilled at using it can be a real force multiplier. I’ll have more on this topic in an article I’m writing about new EDA software packages being launched at European Microwave Week this week. In the meantime, be sure to check out all the software-related content we highlight in this newsletter, including feature articles that provide design workflows for a low-pass filter and an antenna for MIMO LTE mobile applications. |

Compact Antenna For MIMO LTE Mobile Phone Applications
By Gopinath Gampala and C.J. Reddy, EM Software & Systems (USA) Inc.; and Oliver Stäbler and Thomas Hager, AWE Communications GmbH
Long-term evolution (LTE) is one of the 4th generation (4G) mobile communication technologies developed at different frequencies ranging from 400 MHz to 4 GHz with bandwidths up to 20 MHz. LTE technology facilitates multiple antennas performing both transmit and receive operations, (such as multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) to support high data rate applications. However, integrating several antennas onto a printed circuit board (PCB) becomes progressively more difficult as each new generation of handsets experience miniaturization (that is thin, slim shapes).

Improved Microwave Circuit Design Flow Through Passive Model Yield And Sensitivity Analysis
By Modelithics, Inc.
This application note presents a method for improved design flow with a goal of cost-effective first-pass design success. Typically, when an RF/microwave design has to be fine-tuned to fit the design criteria, a design engineer will use the built-in optimization capability in the EDA tool. In a typical case, the optimization engine has to deal with 10 or more variables such as component values that can be changed, and at least three to four goals. In the case of a microwave filter, example goals would include in-band insertion loss and return loss, cutoff frequency, and out-of-band rejection.

Biography Of James C. Maxwell |
|
Mathematical physicist, Maxwell is best remembered as the creator of the electromagnetic theory of light waves. He formulated a set of equations, expressing the basic laws of electricity and magnetism now called Maxwell equations in his honor. This digitized version of Maxwell’s biography, was made possible by Dr. James C. Rautio, who converted the images into word processor files so that others might enjoy the book as well. |
