Broadcasters, ISPs, Telcos, And Carriers To Lead $22B ICT Cybersecurity Market
The DNS infrastructure is regularly subject to attacks of an increasingly paralytic nature. DNS and NTP amplification is proving exceptionally disruptive, enabling the delivery of formidable DDoS attacks reaching unprecedented levels at 500 GB/s. In parallel to the exploitation of DNS weaknesses is the growing concern as the cellular backhaul adopts the all IP architecture. Revenue share fraud and subscriber identity theft are already vexing plagues that are difficult to eradicate altogether. The transition towards 4G LTE is therefore of concern as traditional telecom fraud will be able to leverage tactics and tools from the internet ecosystem. “Not only will attack techniques be replicated on the cellular infrastructure but Internet-based threat actors will expand their own hunting ground to include these new access networks in their catchment area,” says Michela Menting, cybersecurity practice director at ABI Research.
Standardized protocols such as DNSSEC, IPsec, SSL/TLS and algorithms for confidentiality and integrity are being promoted by international standards organizations like the ETSI, 3GPP, IETF, ITU, ATIS and GSMA. However, much more work needs to be done by national regulatory agencies and ICT (Information and Communications Technology) operators in order to actively implement such security technologies within the infrastructure. ABI Research calculates that spending on securing ICTs will hit $22B globally by 2019 and will primarily come from broadcasters, ISPs, Telcos and carriers. However, the rest of the burden is shared by governments, international organizations as well as infrastructure and equipment manufacturers.
