ABI Research recently reported that sales of RF power amplifier for wireless infrastructure will top $2.4 billion, and that translates into a lot of product design and manufacturing. The increasing need for wireless data will be a strong market driver for RF PAs, as the worldwide LTE deployment continues and new smartphone launches spur on the migration to LTE networks.

 

RF PA opportunities exist in the military market for 2013, too; however, the remaining threat of sequestration makes it harder judge where and how big they will be. Despite the uncertainty, GaN will increase its penetration into military systems, including AESA radar upgrades, communication equipment, and EW systems.  While GaN pressures tube technology in these areas, I expect TWT amplifier implementation to remain strong, especially is airborne platforms like UAVs.
