Analyzing RF Coexistence in a Mobile Handset

The design of wireless technologies such as mobile phones is becoming increasingly complex with the need to consider a variety of RF systems such as multi-band cellular antennas, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, NFC and navigation systems (GPS and Glonass). As multiple RF systems often coexist within one device, cosite interference effects needs to be considered in the design process. CST’s electromagnetic (EM) simulation software, CST STUDIO SUITE® and Delcross Technologies’ Electromagnetic Interference Toolkit (EMIT), can be used to analyze cosite interference as well as the effectiveness of potential mitigation strategies. To showcase the practical application of the software tools, this application note looks at three RF systems commonly found in a smart phone: cellular transceiver, Wi-Fi and GPS.
