WiMAX is a family of IEEE 802.16 standards designed to address the needs for Wireless Metropolitan
Area Networks (WMANs). There are currently two implementations being developed for broadband
wireless access (BWA) systems: 802.16-2004 for fixed applications and 802.16 OFDMA (orthogonal
frequency division multiplexing access) for mobile applications. 802.16 OFDMA is also known as 802.16e,
named for its current working group task force.
