The foundations of a modern electromagnetic design tool are described and demonstrated in this article. Those components that take a tool from being merely for analysis into the design realm are its abilities to parameterize and optimize the simulations which are then performed with great speed on hardware graphical processing units. The design process is demonstrated with a design example for a wideband antenna that must perform within specifications over a variety of realistic terrain compositions. The resulting antenna and the computational process are described in detail.
