Bidirectional Transient Field Cable Co-Simulation In CST STUDIO SUITE 2011
August 18, 2011
Computer Simulation Technology (CST) announces the release of transient bidirectional co-simulation between cable currents and the electromagnetic fields in the surrounding space for CST STUDIO SUITE version 2011 SP5, at IEEE EMC 2011 booth #339.
In many EMC applications, cabling has a major impact on the immunity and emissions performance of a system. Cables can receive electromagnetic fields and propagate the induced voltages/currents through enclosures (shields) into sensitive circuits causing interference. Conversely, cables can conduct and radiate electromagnetic noise from a system resulting in EMC compliance issues.
In reality, the coupling between fields and complex cable bundles is bi-directional; cables can both receive and re-radiate electromagnetic fields. Depending on the routing/position of cables within an enclosure, the field distribution, modes and current paths can be strongly affected. In the past, modelers have often simplified the field/cable interaction problem by assuming one-way coupling, but this may produce inaccurate results.
CST has overcome this limitation by tightly integrating CST CABLE STUDIO (CST CS) with the powerful 3D transient solvers in CST MICROWAVE STUDIO (CST MWS). This enables true transient bi-directional field/cable coupling to be simulated for complex cable bundles routed through complex 3D environments such as electronics enclosures, aircraft, automobiles etc. Accurate analysis can be performed efficiently, despite the huge difference in scale between cable cross-section dimensions and overall system/vehicle dimensions.
"The implementation of bi-directional transient field/cable co-simulation in CST CABLE STUDIO enables EMC Engineers to model the complete coupling interactions between electromagnetic fields and complex cable models," commented David Johns, VP Engineering, CST of America. "As in reality, the simulated cable behaves as both a receptor and radiator. This significantly extends the range of EMC applications that can be simulated. "
Availability
The described functionality is released with CST STUDIO SUITE 2011 service pack 5. It is now available for download to customers with valid maintenance contract for the respective solvers.
About CST
CST develops and markets high performance software for the simulation of electromagnetic fields in all frequency bands. Its success is based on the implementation of unique, leading edge technology in a user-friendly interface. CST's customers operate in industries as diverse as Telecommunications, Defense, Automotive, Electronics, and Medical Equipment, and include market leaders such as IBM, Mitsubishi, Samsung, and Siemens. With 180 employees worldwide and a network of qualified distributors, over 220 people are dedicated to the development and support of its EM products in more than 30 countries.
CST's flagship product, CST MICROWAVE STUDIO (CST MWS) is the market leader in Time Domain simulation. It enables the fast and accurate analysis of high frequency devices such as antennas, filters, couplers, planar and multi-layer structures and SI and EMC effects. CST MWS can offer considerable product to market advantages such as shorter development cycles, virtual prototyping before physical trials, and optimization instead of experimentation.
