    7 Noteworthy Technologies From IMS2014

At the 2014 IEEE MTT International Microwave Symposium earlier this month, I had the opportunity to speak with the event’s general chair, Dr. Larry Dunleavy, about the state of the RF and microwave design industry. While he acknowledged that it is a time of relative uncertainty — due in large part to constrained military budgets and conservative fiscal forecasts for 2014 — he also pointed out that there are plenty of emerging markets where RF and microwave technology is making a significant impact. With the Internet of Things (IoT) driving innovation in burgeoning markets like automotive and healthcare  and the development of 5G pushing wireless technology to further heights, there was good reason for nearly 600 companies to flock to the IMS2014 exhibition in Tampa, Fla.

Why Is Apple Stockpiling RF Engineers?

Paul Chang, former principal engineer, project manager, and RF chip lead at Broadcom, recently migrated to Apple, further substantiating rumors that Apple plans on designing and building baseband processors in-house. Chang worked at Broadcom for over 11 years, helping develop a “series of cellular mobile communications CMOS semiconductor products,” including a number of 65 nm quadband single -chip transceivers.

What Can Micro-Windmills Teach Us About The Future Of Medical Device Design?

At some point in the not-so-distant future, you’ll be able to recharge your smartphone by waving it about in the air for a few moments or (less conspicuously) by simply holding it out in a stiff breeze. What does this have to do with medical device design, you ask? Quite a lot, as it turns out.

Inventing The Stochastic Analog to Digital Convertor

Maybe you know who invented microscopes, ballpoints, or glasses. Sometimes, inventors are well-known names that we encounter in history classes. But they may as well be geniuses forgotten by history. Companies and research institutes also have inventors. Imec’s patent group receives about 300 invention report sheets (IRS) per year. These are the documents that our researchers complete when they are convinced that they have found a unique solution. These ideas lead to over 100 patents per year. Bob Verbruggen is a regular visitor to the patent group, having written 15 invention reports in less than 10 years. We asked him to talk about his work on analogue-to-digital convertors (ADCs).

New Generation Solid State Power Amplifier Exceeds 1kW Output Power For Satellite Earth Stations

Careful thermal design coupled with innovative heat sink technologies have resulted in an industry benchmark in solid-state power amplifier technology. This paper presents thermal management, design concepts and reliability measures of a 1.1 kW C Band solid-state power amplifier. The RF chassis of the SSPA 1.1 kW C Band amplifier has been realized in a 6 ru chassis compared to 7ru for the TWTA amplifiers for the same RF power. By Stephen D. Turner, Paradise Datacom LLC and Ahmed M. Zaghlol, R-Theta Inc.

Reliability Advantages Of Modular Solid State Power Amplifiers Compared To Traveling Wave Tube Amplifiers

Amplifier manufacturers have long compared the advantages and disadvantages of solid state power amplifiers (SSPAs) and traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTAs). Every few years, there is typically a technology advance that gives a slight advantage to one technology over the other. This paper shows how the modular design of SSPAs can provide dramatically higher levels of system reliability than TWTAs. By Stephen Turner, VP of Engineering, Paradise Datacom

Modeling Uncertainty In Urban Propagation Using Monte Carlo Theory

Monte Carlo provides an opportunity to handle uncertainty in a scenario by randomly sampling input parameters to obtain results for each unique situation and providing a bound for best and worst case scenarios. One type of Monte Carlo parameter is the Monte Carlo material, which allows the calculation engine to vary its parameters without re-running the scenario. This application note demonstrates how to utilize Monte Carlo materials within REMCOM’s Wireless InSite to vary material properties quickly and efficiently.

EM De-Embedding Magic – Part I: What’s the Problem, Anyway?

Way, way back in 1986, when I was developing the Method of Moments software that we are selling today [1], [2], I encountered (and overcame) many problems. One problem first became apparent when I was demonstrating prototype software at HP (now Agilent, soon to be Keysight Technologies) in Santa Rosa, one of my research sponsors. The results did not look so good. When we compared the results to measurement, the differences steadily increased as we went up in frequency. My funding from HP could be in jeopardy. Not good.

RF Signal Capture And The Beauty Of The Digital Domain

From defense systems to wireless communications networks, bandwidth is an issue to be reckoned with. In the defense industry, electronic warfare (EW) systems in particular have always needed as much of this commodity as it can get, but it has now been joined by radar systems that have operating bandwidths in excess of 1 GHz, which presents significant challenges for their designers as well as those who must measure their performance.
