While end users are enjoying unprecedented power in their hands, ruthless competition has forced wireless device manufacturers, also referred to as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in this paper, to look for innovative options. To maintain a competitive edge, OEMs are pushing for functional components that are smaller and more cost-effective, all while maintaining utmost quality. One such critical component is the radio frequency front end. In this paper, we discuss the challenges facing radio frequency (RF) front end manufacturers and integration efforts in the front end industry, and we provide some technological and application-based insights on the next generation of integrated modules called multimode multiband power amplifiers (MMPAs).
This paper describes how the USAF's 309th Software Maintenance Group (SMXG) at Hill Air Force Base developed the PATS (Portable Automated Test Set)-70 which supports the testing of various A-10/C systems on the flightline. Based on Marvin Test Solutions' MTS-207, a state-of-the-art, ruggedized, portable PXI-based platform designed for flightline, back shop, and airborne applications, the MTS-207 provided the USAF with the necessary flexibility to add a specific test instrumentation, such as GX6315 and GX2065 PXI cards for supporting the A-10/C's specific flightline test needs. New technologies offer engineers of SDR (software-defined radio) systems diverse opportunities to perform digital-signal processing much closer to the antenna than ever before. Strategies for doing so include the latest wideband data converters, monolithic receiver chips, compact RF tuners, and remote receiver modules using gigabit serial interfaces. Each approach presents benefits and tradeoffs that must be considered in choosing the optimal solution for a given application.
A magnetron is a high power microwave oscillator in which the potential energy of an electron cloud near the cathode is converted into r.f. energy in a series of cavity resonators similar to the one shown in Figure 1. As depicted by the low frequency analog, the rear wall of the structure may be considered the inductive portion, and the vane tip region the capacitor portion of the equivalent resonant circuit. The resonant frequency of a microwave cavity is thereby determined by the physical dimension of the resonator together with the reactive effect of any perturbations to the inductive or capacitive portion of the equivalent circuit. This is an important point and will be recalled later.
What Is The Future Of RF Technology For Electronic Warfare Systems?
