Electromagnetic simulation has been used by RF engineers for many years to aid the design of automotive radar sensors, but the increasing demands of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are changing the methods used.  Accurate modeling of increasingly complex circuits and antenna systems leads to simulation problem sizes too large (in terms of physical memory – RAM) for traditional frequency-domain finite element method (FEM) formulations.  As a result of those limitations, design engineers who use FEM tools are forced to simplify their simulation models to fit the computational resources available, trading away accuracy and limiting the effectiveness of their simulator.

A Different Approach: Designing With Modular Filters

Managing filter selection is not without its risks. Over specifying, under specifying, late system changes, long lead times, and unintended consequences of filter technology choices can be incurred at the worst possible times. If one elects to design a system with modular filters however, many of the concerns around these issues can be allayed.

Model AHP-34043530-01 is a high power amplifier operating nominally in 32 to 36 GHz range. It generates over 3 watts of saturated power over the range and provides over 30 dB of small signal gain. Employing Monolithic-Microwave-Integrated-Circuit (MMIC) technology, the amplifier operates from a single bias supply of +8 Vdc to +12 Vdc with an internal voltage regulator and bias sequencing circuitry, consuming about 2.8 A of DC current under linear operation.
