Breakthrough May Pave The Way For Gallium Nitride To Supplant Silicon In Integrated Circuits

Researchers at HRL Laboratories, LLC, have achieved the first demonstration of gallium nitride (GaN) complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) field-effect-transistor (FET) technology, and in doing so have established that the semiconductor’s superior transistor performance can be harnessed in an integrated circuit.

How Bats Recognize Their Own 'Bat Signals'

Individual bats emit sonar calls in the dark, using the echo of their signature sounds to identify and target potential prey. But because they travel in large groups, their signals often "jam" each other, a problem resembling extreme radar interference. How do bats overcome this "cocktail party" cacophony to feed and survive in the wild?

  • Carrier Aggregation In Mobile Devices
    Carrier Aggregation In Mobile Devices

Carrier aggregation (CA) enables mobile network operators worldwide to provide faster data, and allows mobile devices to communicate on multiple LTE bands simultaneously. This, however, creates the challenge of avoiding interference between the bands while keeping up good reception and battery life. Multiplexers are an excellent solution for CA combinations that use closely spaced bands since they provide isolation between and within bands, while allowing them to connect to the antenna at the same time. This white paper discusses the challenges of carrier aggregation, and the important benefits of using multiplexer solutions to solve them.

GaN MMIC PAs Support The Rapid Growth Of Ku Band Applications

Ku Band has become an essential part of the radio frequency spectrum since it was opened for satellite communications over two decades ago. New systems within commercial satellites use the Ku Band to provide worldwide coverage, which is especially attractive for government and military communications. Since the future of this band generates such a high interest, Wolfspeed, a Cree company, offers Ku Band power products using its proven fabrication process of GaN on silicon-carbide substrates. This white paper discusses the new GaN MMIC PAs and how they are able to support the future growth of Ku Band applications.

Optimization Of Torque In A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) For Traction Applications

This article provides a summary of the simulation and optimization of 200 Hz, 8-pole permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) that is typically used for traction applications in automotive and transportation systems.

Modeling And Simulation Of Metamaterial-Based Devices For Industrial Applications

Metamaterials provide great potential for new technology developments, making existing devices smaller, faster, and more efficient. A wide variety of metamaterials produce electromagnetic phenomena that are not seen in natural materials. Simulation can be used when developing new materials to analyze both the bulk property of the material and individual element. This article demonstrates how CTS STUDIO SUITE is used to simulate and design metamaterials from the design of the resonator to the implementation in a full device.

Accuracy Of DTF Measurements On New Spools Of Transmission Line

DTF measurements of raw spools of cable can be made accurately enough in the field to identify handling damage with a reasonable uncertainty bound. This measurement compliments other specification based measurements already done on the spools using frequency domain data. It is important to realize that the same cannot be said for DTF testing of complete antenna systems. In this circumstance, the frequency limiting aspects of the system and the ambiguity in the load termination (antenna) make pass/fail testing of components in the entire system problematic. This white paper discusses the best course of action to take for making baseline measurements for future comparison, and provides measurement examples.

Custom EMI Filters

EMI Filters are used to prevent electromagnetic interference in avionics and aircraft systems, as well as military shipboard/vehicle electronics, and in military communication systems. Electromagnetic interference can cause a complete loss of data in communications systems, or a simple decline in data quality.

    Microwave USB Power Sensor (MA24106A)

The MA24106A power sensor is a USB power sensor that eliminates the need of a traditional power meter. It is designed to provide accurate average power measurements from 10 MHz to 6 GHz over 60 dB of dynamic range. It is a highly accurate, standalone instrument that communicates with a PC via USB or with many of the Anritsu handheld products (often requiring Option 19). The power measurement capability of MA24106A is intended to mimic that of a traditional thermal (thermo-electric) power sensor by providing true-RMS measurements, although the MA24106A offers a wider measurement range. Therefore, it is ideal for measuring average power of CW, modulated RF waveforms such as 3G, 4G, OFDM, and multi-tone signals. True RMS power measurements enable one to make accurate measurements regardless of the input signal type.
