A full-chip analyzation of a radio-frequency integrated circuit (RFIC) requires more than any single electromagnetic (EM) simulation technology, as the structure’s geometries and scales can pose a significant challenge to overcome. A successful RFIC analyzation usually requires a parasitic extraction simulator, a planar EM simulator, and arbitrary 3D solvers. This white paper inspects the characterization of all three technologies from these simulators using the NI AWR Design Environment™.

Oscillators are used in most electronic systems for a variety of practices including digital clock synchronization, stabilizing an RF signal for a receiver or transmitter, and accurate time keeping in real-time clocks. The specifications for the system and how the oscillator needs to function will determine most of the parameters of the device. The LC or RC resonator will control the frequency and determine what stability specifications may be achieved in many applications, but the addition of a quartz crystal will greatly improve the frequency stability of the device by several orders of magnitude, often with a minimal cost impact.
As high speed serial data rates advance from 15 Gb/s to beyond 50 Gb/s, we face a fundamental shift. Conventional logic-emulating NRZ (non-return to-zero) signaling is being replaced by PAM4, a 4-level pulse amplitude modulation scheme that takes half the bandwidth to transmit the same payload as the equivalent NRZ signal. This white paper assists in the understanding on how to use S-parameters, how to think of channel response and crosstalk in terms of S-parameters, and how to look for problems that could be caused by inaccurate S-parameter measurements.
