Non-Blocking RF Switch Matrix

A non-blocking RF switch matrix is more complex than the blocking type, but it’s also more flexible.  In this configuration, an input can be switched to multiple outputs.  One input can in fact be switched to all of the outputs at once.  This provides an extra degree of flexibility compared to the blocking architecture.  However, a non-blocking architecture still has the limitation of not allowing two or more inputs to be switched to the same output.  Input 1 for example can be simultaneously switched to every output or selectively switched to several outputs at once, but no other input can be switched to any of the same outputs.

  • Design and Simulation of Phased Arrays For Radar/Aerospace Applications

    Phased array antenna systems, which use sets of two or more antennas, offer improved performance over single antennas and are well-known for their usefulness in radar and aerospace applications. Communication system design software supports the design and analysis of phased arrays, as well as their implementation in a system of antenna elements, power divider/combiners, phase shifters, and other typical components. This article examines how software can be used to simulate both small and large phased arrays in typical configurations.

Designing a Phased Array Antenna Using Antenna Magus and CST STUDIO SUITE®

In order to consider all potential designs and quickly produce antennas that fit their specifications, engineers choose to use antenna synthesis. In addition to synthesis tools, full-wave 3D simulation can complement synthesis tools and allow designs to be checked and fine-tuned for effects that cannot be accounted for analytically. This article explains how the Antenna Magus, an antenna synthesis tool, and CST MICROWAVE STUDIO®, a full-wave 3D electromagnetic simulation program, are used to design a planar phased array.

EMC Simulation In The Design Flow Of Modern Electronics

It is necessary to be compliant with all EMC standards in order to release a product to market. Since EMC engineering is traditionally only used in measurement, EMC compliance ends up being considered late in the design process. If problems arise at this late stage, correcting them can become expensive, especially if multiple prototype iterations are required. For this reason, simulation is used to allow EMC compliance to be analyzed in greater depth in the earlier stages of the design process.

Gallium Nitride RF Devices for Harsh Military Environments

Today’s advanced military systems – including phased array radar, communications systems and EW sensors – require high-frequency, high-bandwidth, high-power, high-efficiency devices. These applications are where GaN differentiates itself from other materials. GaN devices can operate at higher bias voltages, which provides several advantages at both the system/subsystem and circuit level, leading to a proportional decrease in current requirement for the circuit. The bottom line: GaN improves the system-level trade-off of size, weight, and power.
