Modules targeted for international set-top box markets

Plano, TX -- Microtune today announced that Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Ltd. has deployed Microtune's MicroTuner MT2111 analog/digital single-chip tuner in four different Samsung tuner modules targeted for the European, Korean, Japanese, and US set-top box markets. Samsung's modules, some of which also contain Microtune's MicroStreamer upstream amplifier, are key building blocks for set-top boxes enabling both one-way and fully interactive digital video, voice, and data over cable.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics is an electronic parts and components manufacturer serving worldwide customers. Headquartered in Kyongi-do, South Korea, the company is focused on digital products based on high-frequency engineering and design technologies, including mobile communications, audio/video and computer peripherals. It is a key supplier to private labelers, as well as to its flagship sister company, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a consumer electronics leader and major worldwide supplier of digital television sets, cable modems and set-top boxes.

Samsung's four modules are in production today. With Microtune's MT2111 tuner as the critical receiving/tuning electronics, the modules provide a pre-integrated, tested and standards-based RF front end for delivering digital multimedia services. They streamline manufacturing by enabling cable equipment suppliers to plug-in a high-performance tuner as a modular component on an assembly line.

"We are pleased to be working again with Samsung Electro-Mechanics. The combination of its systems expertise and our silicon tuners results in RF technology engineered to bring consumers an exceptional digital TV experience," said James A. Fontaine, Microtune's CEO and president. "Our design win with Samsung also demonstrates how our single-chip tuners offer a compelling solution for module manufacturers. Our tuners, as well as our Reference Designs, enable them to simplify their designs, to get to market faster and to achieve higher throughput in the manufacturing process."

"Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. is committed to be on the front line in the global electronics industry, and we deliver products and technologies that meet the demands of specific countries," said Mr. Hyo-Bum Lee, VP, Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. "By working with Microtune, we have secured very advanced silicon tuner technology that supports exacting international standards and performance requirements, while achieving minimization, accelerated design time and excellent reliability. As one of our strategic silicon suppliers, Microtune offers a low-solution cost for very high-performance and market-proven RF products."
