Remcom Announces Enhancements To EM Software Tools
September 6, 2006
One of the new technologies being introduced is the XSTREAM hardware acceleration package for XFDTD, the company's full-wave 3-D electromagnetic (EM) solver based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. XSTREAM use a graphics processor unit (GPU) to provide much faster calculation speeds than using a desktop computer's central processor units (CPUs) alone. To obtain the best enhancement, XSTREAM employs a high-performance video card, and the FDTD calculation is transferred from the CPU to this graphics card. "We have seen speed-up factors of 10 and even 20 with the appropriate cards," David Carpenter, commercial director at Remcom, said.

Remcom will also debut a parallel/multiprocessing version of Wireless InSite v2.3, the company's tool for modeling the effects of buildings and terrain on the propagation of EM waves. This multiprocessor and cluster-based version enhances the well-established propagation prediction tool. Predictions of how locations of transmitters and receivers affect signal strength are now even easier to obtain. Rough terrain, urban structures, and indoor environments are easily included in the modeling process, together with accurate multi-path capabilities.

In addition, Remcom will release VariPose v1.2, a program that provides for repositioning of the Male Visible Human mesh including internal anatomical structures. One of the many new features and enhancements is that VariPose now has more features on the skeleton head. This allows more precise positioning of hands and cell phone near the head, as the new features are more closely associated with the tissue data and mesh model. As a further aide to positioning the skeleton, props may now be imported into the skeleton view. CAD files in .STL may easily be positioned next to the skeleton features.
Other enhancements to Varipose include:
- Auto-selection of skeleton joints,
- Improved mouse control of 3-D mesh view,
- Improved project creation and file handling,
- Improved cropping of mesh model,
- Improved zoom and pan functions, and
- Updated icon set and background.
