The Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) standard offers high-capacity point-to-multipoint connectivity and is backed by over 220 of the world's most prominent communications equipment companies. WiMAX capability and interoperability in broadband wireless access (BWA) communications products enables network providers worldwide to deliver economical broadband data, voice, and video services to both residential and business customers.
The Visual System Simulator™ (VSS) design suite from Applied Wave Research (AWR®) provides a WiMAX broadband fixed-wireless solution for the design of WiMAX-certified BWA products. This solution meets the IEEE standard 802.16 Wireless MAN-OFDM PHY specifications and provides all the bit-level functionality, including framing, randomization, coding, interleaving, modulation, and pilot, channelization, as well as bandwidth options for uplink and downlink operations. The VSS WiMAX solution can be used by RF and baseband system-on-chip (SoC) designers, component suppliers, original equipment manufacturers (OEM), and customer premises equipment (CPE) companies, and infrastructure and network equipment providers.
The VSS WiMAX system enables development teams to specify key parameters such as bandwidth, carrier frequency, code rate, modulation type, and average transmitted power. A hierarchal WiMAX signal source and receiver with a user-friendly parameter window includes a one-step setting for uplink or downlink signal generation, configurable frames, and support for all other parameters such as code rate and modulation settings.
The hierarchal approach of the WiMAX system gives baseband engineers visibility into the way in which the signal is constructed and demodulated and enables them to have inter-node access. It also eliminates any uncertainty in the authenticity of the generated signal and the ability to customize the demodulation algorithms. In addition, the user-friendly parameter window provides traditional RF/analog engineers with a high-level single-block solution and the ability to effortlessly generate test vectors for use throughout the design process, from system concept to testing in the laboratory.
