S11 (S22) Test Procedure

Introduction:

Various techniques are available to measure the S11 (or S22) parameter over a range of frequencies. The following procedure details one such technique. The method detailed here uses a gated time domain response of a selected section to mathematically derive the frequency domain response of the selected section in terms of the S11 parameter. The method requires the use of a vector network analyzer (VNA) capable of performing the time domain transform on the frequency domain data. This technique allows items like adapters and fixtures to be removed from the response after the calibration of the network analyzer making it very useful for passive components such as coaxial connectors.

Scope:

This procedure covers the set up, calibration, and testing steps required to perform S11 (or S22) reflection measurements utilizing an Agilent 8510 vector network analyzer with time domain and gating capability.
